Still Life Self Portrait 12/14/15
1. In your own words, define symbol:
A symbol is an object, illustration, word or anything that somehow represents something else. 2. What kinds of objects might an artist include in a still life? List at least three:
3. Name one theme sometimes expressed in a still life. One theme that is sometimes expressed in a still life is success and wealth. The still life might be attempting to portray this part of the identity of a person by including objects that can only be bought with enormous amount of money. 4. In your own words, define "self portrait": A self portrait is a representation of the artist created by the artist. The portrait does not have to be literal. An example is my own still life where my face ins't included but the objects that define me are present in the artwork. 5. Choose one object used in your still life, and describe what it symbolizes. One object that is in my still life is a bottle of pills. I struggle with frequent headaches. They occurs day after day for a week or two then disappear for another period of time. It was important for this object to be included in my still life because headaches can really affect the way I socialize with people. Pain can affect any human being. We are all vulnerable in some way or the other. I saw the importance of this when thinking about what object to put into my still life. |
Material World Project 12/1/15
1. In your own words, define "necessity."
A necessity is something essential to someone's living. Without it that person would not be able to sustain themselves.
2. In your own words, define "luxury."
A luxury is something that a person wants and can easily afford. A luxury is not accessible to everyone.
3. List the material items you possess that you consider a necessity (aside from food, water, shelter, air)
5. Choose one item from your list of necessities and make an argument for why you can live without it.
I can probably live without a microwave because I would have a stove to heat or cook food. As long as one source of heat is present to make food then I can live perfectly fine.
6. Explain why the item from question 5 is a necessity.
If I go to school without something as simple as a pencil I cannot take full advantage of the education being given to me. How will I take notes without a notebook? How will I carry my books without a bag? I cannot do anything in school if I'm not physically prepared. I cannot live without my school materials because without them I will have a poor education that will negatively affect me my entire life. If I don't show proof of a good education then people will not want me to work for or with me. Not having a job means that I cannot sustain myself.
7. Can a person consume too much (in terms of material goods, not just food)?
A person can definitely consume too much. Once they consume the necessary amount then it can be considered excessive. The items they buy are just taking up space or may not even be of much use to them.
8. How does consumption negatively impact the city/country/world?
Consumption negatively impacts the world because all materials are made from the earth. If we take too much from the earth and then throw it back into the environment in a different form then it will cause the world to waste away.
9. How does consumption positively impact the city/country/world?
Consumption can positively impact the world because it allows for people's ideas to become income when they are able to sell their products. People can also get jobs where they are well paid because of the mass amount of items that are brought from the company they work for.
